BAITBALL (01) “I’ll slip an extra shrimp on the barbie for you” is the first episode of a periodic and nomadic series dedicated to collaborative practices in contemporary art. The first episode was curated collectively by sixteen galleries, project spaces, artist run-spaces, collectives and independent curators and involved works by over one hundred international artists on display from January 5 to February 29, 2020 – in the spaces of Palazzo San Giuseppe, Polignano a Mare.
The choice of inviting Maria Adele Del Vecchio, as a result of the Beat Meierei experience, is motivated by the idea of contact, to be intended as relational involvement. We are particularly attached to this idea, and we have found it embedded, from the first moment on, in the collective event called baitball. We have been immediately attracted by the very definition of this work: the artist defines Beat Meierei as a “social sculpture”.
In a deeper exchange with the artist we could explore the remarkable communitarian potential and the interdisciplinary aspects that characterise this work, and that are also very akin to the latest artistic research lines of studioconcreto. In the last year our attention has indeed concentrated upon the relation between body, dance, and architecture within the social space as a flexible and multi-functional field.
In this occasion we will continue to express our attention towards these themes through a documentary work: Maria Adele’s words will be printed on a long fabric and will be accompanied by a narration rich in evocative images. This work will allow us to explore first hand the synaesthetic experience of Beat Meierei.
The aim of this project is a linguistic, physical and logical shift: a criss-cross of parallel journeys resulting in the mixing of myth and reality, extreme creativity and entertainment. Thus, Naples – as the privileged scenery of all kinds of deviation and philology – was the ideal city for such an experiment.
“The social sculpture project on which I’ve worked no-stop from July 2017 until December 2018, mixed visual arts and performances with the clubbing scene of Naples, and it saw the cooperation of artists, dj’s and promoters, in the situationist belief that free time has an actual – yet totally unexplored – revolutionary potential. A small-scale ‘Theatre of the Absurd’, the effects of which have inevitably modified, for good and for bad, my ideas about art, creation, society, and beauty. (Maria Adele Del Vecchio)
