Alvin Curran, Live in Spigolizzi is an event within the public program of the exhibition Un dancing per ballare (studioconcreto, Lecce, 18.05.19 – 07.09.19), whereby a selection of artworks and documents highlight the value of the everyday life as a political space. The experiences analysed in the exhibition, with their experimental character, embody the primary relation between bodies, movement, sound, architectural and natural space, as entities that can directly contribute to the growth of a poetic imagery mainly connected to the theme of dwelling.
This is the case of Spigolizzi, an old country house in the south of Salento that in the 1970s hosted Norman Mommens and Patience Gray. After a long period of travelling, Mommens, a Belgian sculptor, and Gray, an English writer, decided to settle in the secluded countryside of Southern Italy. In harmony with the rural context surrounding them, they started investigating the anthropological and human aspects of everyday life, by establishing a dialogue between the rhythms of nature and artistic production. The house soon began a point of landing and of reference for several artists. Among them, Alvin Curran composed there the famous piece Under the fig tree (1972). After several years Curran will go back to pay homage to the house by using minimalistic and primitive instruments, the essential to allow the sound to inhabit the world.
Alvin Curran, Live in Spigolizzi was realized thanks to Nick Gray, Maggie Armstrong, Tommaso Del Signore, Mauro Durante e Silvia Perrone, Daniele Vitali, Carlo Mazzotta.
