Popular School – Tools and Collaborative Practices

The initiative aims to create spaces and practices intended for the community, capable of sparking – in collaboration with partner organizations – a future vision for the neighborhood. We believe that the modest scale of the public housing cluster within the INA Casa district, Via del Mare in Lecce, can facilitate a process of collective design, guided by individuals capable of leading a re-signification of the neighborhood through an exploration of the past (1st workshop with a historical focus), the present (2nd workshop for gathering needs and desires), and the future (3rd workshop to design a pilot project for a sustainable island). The ultimate goal is to create a community-curated exhibition, a pilot project, and thoughtfully considered guidelines.

To strengthen the sense of community, encourage participation, and give a multiplicity of voices and perspectives to this process, specific activities will be developed for different segments of the population (children, young people, families, and the elderly). Led by internationally renowned Italian artists, these hands-on workshops, with a strong artisanal focus, will be rooted in practices of material recovery and reuse. These processes will serve to shape temporary communities of shared space, fostering multiple, collective purposes.

Il Postaccio

Il Postaccio represents one of the central spots in the INA-Casa district, Via del Mare. It serves as a kind of crossroads, a connection point between the neighborhood and the city, where different generations of young people have gathered and experienced it as a meeting place. Thanks to some residents of the neighborhood, and the dedication of Rossella Tricarico and Samuele Vincenti, we have committed to revitalizing and caring for this space. These meetings are designed to discuss key issues aimed at improving the quality of life in the neighborhood, experimenting with practices of self-determination, and allowing residents to actively take responsibility for the space.

Chiara Camoni, Postaccio Fantastico Giardino
Free workshop for children and families

Inspired by the meeting methods used by active citizenship groups in INA-Casa neighborhoods in the early 1950s, aimed at fostering connections in public spaces and promoting social cohesion, we have invited artist Chiara Camoni to lead a workshop in the INA-Casa district, Via del Mare, during the exhibition period. The workshop will begin with a collective reflection on a section of the neighborhood known as Il postaccio,” followed by the collective creation of terracotta artifacts specifically designed for this location. On this occasion, a set of elements from the artwork displayed in the exhibition will leave the museum and move onto the street, explicitly fulfilling its intended purpose: to foster conviviality.

Free workshop for youth and young adults

How can a 40-square-meter garden become a resource for the neighborhood that surrounds it? This practical intervention in what is widely known as “il postaccio” aims to preserve the spontaneity and unpredictability contained within its garden and to increase its biodiversity.

Giuseppe De Mattia  It Used to Be All Countryside

It Used to Be All Countryside expresses a nostalgic phrase that recalls the rhetoric often used to evoke the vastness and openness of space before the urban expansion of a city. The work is part of the artist’s practice of capturing brief stories, “Gossips,” which, through rudimentary graphics, open a window into an intimate and informal form of communication. The canvas was created in 2023 by Giuseppe De Mattia for the series “It Seems That All Roads Were Via del Mare” as a response to the historical memory-gathering phase of the neighborhood. The artist contributed with sixteen narratives formalized in posters specifically designed for the eight bricked-up windows of the “Social Center, Workers’ Housing in Lecce – Via del Mare.” The first poster was put up in July 2023, followed by a second one created for the exhibition, with the aim of giving voice to a plurality of perspectives and reviving the building’s central role, as it once had in the community, restoring its aesthetic and social value.

Gianluca Marinelli,  After the Monks – An Artist’s Guided Tour 

The tour includes a meeting with the artist, during which we will visit various significant points in the INA Casa district, located on Via del Mare, near the convent of the Franciscan friars, currently known as the Convent of Saint Anthony of Padua. The convent occupies the sixteenth-century suburban estate of Fulgenzio Della Monica.

The tour will begin in “Piazzetta Fulgenzio della Monica,” near the arch and the small Church of Saints Philip and James (16th century), which stand out among the new buildings near Via Imperatore Adriano. Originally, this was the main entrance to the noble estate. Gianluca Marinelli will guide us with anecdotes and reflections, exploring the various historical layers of the urban area, linking functional and morphological aspects of the convent. We will delve into the connection between community life and monastic life, as well as the charitable aspects of the INA plan, both of which were dedicated to fostering a sense of belonging and self-sufficiency.

This intervention represents the final chapter in a long reflection on neighborhood practices. Over the past year, this has involved studioconcreto, the INA-Casa district, Via del Mare, the city of Lecce, and all the artists and researchers who have worked with us. Together, we have contributed with modest success to creating a sense of belonging among the residents of this part of the city. This has become an opportunity to explore and renegotiate the challenges of urban living and community dwelling.

The route will include stops at key points in the neighborhood that host Giuseppe De Mattia’s second series of posters, It Seems That All Roads Were Via del Mare. This initiative reflects the phase of gathering historical memories from the neighborhood for the eight bricked-up windows of the “Social Center, Workers’ Housing in Lecce – Via del Mare.” The aim is to give voice to the diverse memories and revive the building’s role as a central hub, restoring the aesthetic and social value of this place and its community. Additionally, there will be a presentation of the artifacts created during the Postaccio Fantastico Giardino workshop, led by Chiara Camoni, which involved the collective creation of terracotta artifacts specifically designed for this location.
