Performance di parola tra gesto e architettura

Casa a Mare, Simona Cleopazzo, Pietro Gaglianò, Roberta Mansueto (takecare) and Marta Olivieri, Post Disaster

studioconcreto, Lecce

3 – 5.09.2020

Performance di Parola tra Gesto e Architettura [Word performance between gesture and architecture] is a series of events inspired by the practices of radical pedagogy. The series aims at deconstructing words thanks to performative actions that explore the realms of etymology and meaning, thanks to alternative forms that occur in various semantic and disciplinary fields. The goal of this research is to open up a reflection on language, on what is beyond it and at the same time implies it: words, gestures, architecture. The series will host contributions by Roberta Mansueto (takecare), Marta Olivieri, Pietro Gaglianò, Simona Cleopazzo and by the collective projects Casa a Mare and Post Disaster. Most of the contributors are active in our area and share processes and practices that aim at critically thematising the space of action. They will establish a relation with the INA-casa neighbourhood, with the aim of reconsider once again the inter-subjective space of the street as the matrix of political and social debates.

This series of meetings was inaugurated in July with the solo show I – WE – YES by Claire Fontaine, which can be visited until 15 September 2020, and with a lecture by the collective artist about the connection between experience, representation and inter-subjectivity. Claire Fontaine highlighted the political value of bodily coexistence that, despite the obstacles and the symptomatic crisis of presence, should not be replaced by normalising the indirect means of communication as the only way to establish connections.

Performance di Parola tra Gesto e Architettura is promoted by the General Directorate for Contemporary Creativity and is one of the projects that won the second edition of the “Creative Living Lab” award and funded as part of the extraordinary 2020 program in the field of culture and entertainment of the Puglia Region.

3 SEPTEMBER

corpotesto

workshop curated by Roberta Mansueto (takecare) and Marta Olivieri

corpotesto is an eco-aware workshop using the body and the text within the INA-casa neighbourhood in Lecce.

corpotesto tries to establish a dialogue among the various levels of landscape, namely the visible, the invisible, and the biotic ones, through textual eco-compositions that get reactivated by the act of reading. The aim is to stimulate, thanks to the word, the most fundamental bodily practices, and to unleash a “response-ability” of the bodies inserted into the public and natural spaces. At the same time, the workshop aims at questioning the body in what concerns the creation of the space in which the body itself moves, acts, and interact, in order to experiment the various possibilities of co-inhabiting the space.

Lezione Popolare

by Pietro Gaglianò. History of art for young people and adults

Pedagogical experimentation plays a central role in the art critics’ research. Starting from the experience of Nuova Didattica Popolare [New people’s didactic], a Guilmi Art Project held between 2012 and 2017, this experimentation took the form of conversations with the inhabitants of rural and urban communities. Public spaces (or those spaces that are perceived as a community space) recover their very nature of places made for sharing opinions and thoughts. Here, these views are solicited by evoking images and artworks. The main challenge for everyone is to find a common language and the art forms, thanks to their symbolic field, provide the perfect ground for this research.

Prima Casa

by Casa a Mare

public inauguration ceremony

Within the series Performance di Parola tra Gesto e Architettura, the art collective Casa a Mare has created the polychrome tile named Prima Casa [First home]. The tile was especially realised to be placed in the INA-casa apartment blocks. Thus, it synthesises a journey of analysis and appropriation of both the plastic/figurative aspects and the historical/social facets of the INA social housing plan.

All events will be preceded by Appunti per un nuovo femminismo dalla stanza tutta per sé all’eco-femminismo [Notes for a new feminism, from the room of one’s own to eco-feminism], a cycle of conversations about eco-feminism curated by Simona Cleopazzo and held in private homes, organised by the “word of mouth” method used for the sale of kitchen robots, tupperware and cosmetics.

Casa a Mare is a research project in the socio-cultural and aesthetic fields, a dynamic studio founded in 2014 by Luca Coclite (Gagliano del Capo, Lecce, 1981) and Giuseppe de Mattia (Bari, 1980) in collaboration with Claudio Musso (Seriate, Bergamo, 1982). Casa a Mare has organised and participated in several exhibitions and performances in institutional spaces as well as in independent and non conventional venues.

Pietro Gaglianò (1975) is an art critic and independent curator. After graduating in Architecture, he explored in depth the connection between the aesthetics of power and the counter-narratives enacted by art, giving priority to the urban social context as the setting of contemporary art expression, with a particular focus on the theoretical systems of Performance Art. In his books and in the exhibitions he curated in Italy and abroad, Gaglianò experiments hybrid formats that mix art and social sciences. This experimentation is pivotal to nurture the political perception of public spaces and communities. In this field, he published numerous essays and the book Memento. L’ossessione del Visibile [Memento. The obsession of the visible] (Postmedia Books, 2016). He teaches in various institutions in Italy and in the United States. Gaglianò is also active in international projects and networks that experiment practices of art and informal education for social inclusion and against discrimination. On the subject of radical pedagogy he published La sintassi della libertà. Arte, pedagogia, anarchia [The syntax of freedom. Art, pedagogy, anarchy] (Gli Ori, 2020).

Roberta Mansueto is an independent curator. She graduated in Visual cultures and curatorial practices at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in 2015. In 2014, together with Caterina Molteni and Denise Solenghi, she launched Tile project space (Milan), a space for artistic research and for the promotion of young Italian artists. In 2018 she conceptualised and founded takecare, a project that explores the practice of writing in contemporary art. Writing is conceived as care and practice of one’s self, activating the text through writing performances that range from reading to conduction. Mansueto also collaborated, among others, to the projects Post Disaster Rooftops, Ramdom, Apuliart Contemporary. Since 2020 she is the curator of a garden and of a residency within the project OrtoFertile [Fertile orchard], a research organisation that promotes studies of ethno-botanic, agro-biodiversity, ecology and eco-feminism.

Marta Olivieri is author and performer. In 2013 she graduated in contemporary dance at Formazione Bartolomei, directed by R. Appià. In 2014 she got the certification of Modem Pro and Modem Advanced dance at Scenario Pubblico, Catania. In 2018 she graduated as Somatic Movement Educator within the education programme Body-Mind Centering® and started holding seminars for somatic and composition research under the direction of Fernando R. Ferrer at Scenario Pubblico, Catania. Since 2017 Olivieri is holding the workshops Pratica delle posture – incontri di consapevolezza corporea abitabili per tutt* i corpi [Practices of posture – Bodily awareness meetings inhabitable by all bodies]. In the sessions she uses the instruments of experiential anatomy. In 2018 she took part in L’uomo che cammina [The man who walks] for DOM (Sirna-Delogu). In 2019 and 2020 she participated in the project Roma Non Esiste [Rome doesn’t exist]. She is currently the author of the performative work Trespass | Processing an emerging choreography.

Post Disaster is a curatorial and critical platform that brings together designers, thinkers, and artists for exploring the condition of Mediterranean urban landscape. Their research aims at shedding light on the inequality mechanisms that are triggered by global scale production, starting from Taranto, a city that epitomizes the inner contradictions of the Western socio-economic system. The project, founded by PLSTCT (Grazia Mappa and Gabriele Leo), Gabriella Mastrangelo and Peppe Frisino, aims at creating an interdisciplinary dialogue, pursuing a rich and complex gaze that the limits of each discipline alone would not allow. The Post Disaster performances unfold in various episodes that take place on the rooftops of the city and that are named Post Disaster Rooftops. They are collective performances for building, sharing, and de-centralising a knowledge that is usually concentrated in culturally privileged urban contexts.

Simona Cleopazzo (1972) cultural activist, writer, and feminist. She founded the Lecce branch of the Italian league against AIDS, she wrote and realised many European projects and coordinated a communication campaign against female genital mutilations. She participates in the reading group Orti di guerra [War orchards], coordinates the library piccola biblioteca della 167a [167a little library] in a social housing neighbourhood, curates the women film series Alice e le altre [Alice and the others] and writing workshops about diaries in the Dozza prison in Bologna (1994/2000), and Borgo San Nicola in Lecce (2006/2020). She holds conversations about feminism in private houses. She published the novel Tre noci moscate nella dote della sposa [Three nutmeg in the bride’s dowry] (Lupo editore 2012), Irene e Frida [Irene and Frida] (Musicaos editore 2016), 150+1, appunti sull’amore e sulla scrittura [150+1, notes about love and writing] (Collettiva edizioni 2019).
